I think you've missed a low-tech approach: where the computer is located. Having the computer in a highly visible location, such as the lounge rather than the child's bedroom, and with the monitor facing the room means that a parent is better place…

Interesting points Sheldon... one would like to hope that by the time ones children get to an age of discovery they have been well taught in what is right and wrong, acceptable and unacceptable.... This teaching must take place between 0 and 6 years…

Hi Sheldon, yes, parental control software does work, but some are more effective than others, and it depends on how it has been configured. Have a look at www.getk9.com as it is a pretty good product. There are still some limitations that will be a…

Does parental control software really work? Most of the kids I know, know more about computers than their parents and would easily be able to get around it. And even if it did work, would that prevent them from developing coping strategies and using…

Parents Responsibilities Extend to the Internet Too !

Parents who have children under the age of 18 at home are 'Internet Parents'. As such, they have a responsibility in managing what can be accessed by children on the internet.

The entire spectrum of human behaviour can be found on the internet from the most noble to the most debauched. As parents, we cannot monitor our kids internet activity all of the time, yet by installing parental control software, we can at least play our part, in limiting harmful material from being viewed.

How Concerned are Companies with Regard to Internet Surfing by Staff?

Each company has a different policy regarding internet use. Some will lock down access to only a few sites, while others may have an open access policy. Others may deploy access rules on their firewall or use a hardware appliance to block certain categories from being accessed.

Internet abuse is common, and habits can be hard to break. Even a staff member spending 45 minutes to an hour per day can build up to alot of lost revenue and productivity for a company.

Businesses now have to contend w… Continue

Hi Dean,
Your product sounds very timely I think families are really only just coming to terms with the impact of unsafe PC or Laptops.I live in a area where there are 4 adsl 2 and we are the only secure internet.
Yr comments about Cyber Bullying is a subject quite dear to my family. As one of my daughters has been a victim not so much as some with cyber bullying. But we now have a very safe practice and standard in our house. The bullying got so bad in her day to day life in school grounds and txtn and MSN my daughter became suicidal. She currently is getting a great support team through the mental health sector.
Re marketing your idea I would suggest getting a hold of board of trustees in all schools. They return end of the month get them to allow you to do a brief demo at their meetings get the word of mouth out there. Also parent evenings.Sad to say quite a few parents don't seem to care to protect their families within the home. Also a great place is preschools they can arrange a handout to go into all kids newsletters and be sent home in their lunch boxes. This kind of marketing is low cost and reaches a lot you wouldn't normally reach.
High schools as you know are the biggest environment where cyber bullying takes place I would get a hold of Papanui highs principle and get his ok to speak to all school support staff like Councillor and even school nurses.Police support groups would be a excellent avenues as well.
Hope this helps in some small way.
Have a great day and a safe new year.
Regards
Lois
