Rise in staff fraud predicted

Businesses must brace themselves for a spike in staff fraud as the recession bites, KPMG forensic specialist Mark Leishman says.

KPMG's latest fraud survey shows that in the two years to the end of 2008, New Zealand respondents lost about $21.5 million to fraudsters in 231 cases.

On average they lost $620,000, which many smaller businesses would struggle to absorb, Mr Leishman said.
