Thanks Phil for your tips :) They are quite helpful.
Normally, I would separate the project into different stages and ask for a payment either monthly or after a stages got sign off. But sometimes things are not east to be controlled.

Hi Charles

That IMHO is definitely a highlight. I worked for a guy once whose philosophy was "the job's not finished till the money's in the bank". It's relatively easy to finish the job - but this last step is never easy.

I assume you are doing everything right - but there are heaps of sites / books that say pretty much the same thing. Getting payment starts before the job does - setting expectations etc. I don't know how yoy operate, but you need to be very clear at the start about payment - and follow it up. Still doesn't guarantee success - but it helps.

I'm lucky - most colleagues are still recording their time in six minute spells, and then after it's all over, trying to figure out if they can charge the full time spent. I have a couple of clients like that - but the rest all pay in advance by monthly A/P. Advantages for them (tax law won't let them deduct until billed - unless paid in advances) - and for me. Only problem is when we do additional work I have to remember to get this approved in advance.

It's not purely business related - more holistic - but it certainly enables me to build my business. Over 2.5 years ago I had a stroke. It took me 9 months just to be reasonably confident I could still be an accountant. I was generally on the uphill movement - but the last few months have been a bit lower.

On the Tuesday after Labour day, at 10.45 pm, I recovered. Earlier in the evening I'd been stiff and not alert (my usual evening status), and suddenly I was not stiff, my brain was clear - and it's been that way ever since. Tiredness is now normal tiredness - not mind and body shutting down like it was - it feels great.

So I'm celebrating my return every day.
